31日 3D Scanner & Water Flotation

Yesterday was a very busy day on site! Before we removed the human burial from the ground we used our Scene Digitizer to take a 3D scan. The scan not only gives us a digital record of the burial itself but it allows us to create a digital reconstruction of the burial environment. This reconstruction is very important for analyzing the burial within its archaeological context.

Today we began a new job at the lab: flotation. Flotation is an important process for recovering plant remains from archaeological sites. Once you decide where to take your sediment sample for flotation, you fill a machine with water and pour the sample in. Then you mix up the sample very carefully and any organic materials, like seeds, float to the top. You then help the materials flow over the side of the machine into a special sieve that catches the sample. It's wet, messy work but a lot of fun!

31日 有朋高校の生徒さんが発掘に参加されました Yuho high school students participate

札幌から有朋高校の生徒さんが発掘に参加されました。

3人ともはじめての発掘体験でしたが、外国の研究者の方々の英語による(!?)アドバイスを受けながら貝殻や動物の骨を発掘していました。

Yuho high school students participated in our excavation.
They are first time excavation, but they excavated animal bone and shell while receiving advice by English of foreign researchers.

午後からはラボに移り、土器の注記を行いました。

ラボで岡田先生からレクチャーを受けています。

They moved to the lab in the afternoon, made a note of pottery.
They have received a lecture from Okada senei in the lab.

発掘はどんどん進んでいます。

Excavation is proceeding steadily.

夕方には礼文高校の校長先生が発掘現場へ差し入れを持ってきてくれました。

30日 整理作業いよいよ本格化 Lab Works for Hamanaka 2 Site

Working in the lab today involved working with materials from 2013.

The cleaning and separating of this material allowed the lab team to gain a greater understanding of what to look for during excavation. This knowledge included: a more in-depth understanding of what cut marks look like on bones, in comparison with muscle attachments, learning and utilizing information about Okhotsk pottery by separating pottery with decorative features. 

The lab team also worked with not only the catalogue system between general finds and specials finds, but also worked with labeling the 2011 material at the end of the day. The experience of the lab, has given myself along with the rest of the lab team a greater understanding of what to look for during the excavation process.

一つ一つ手にとってクリーニングをすると、骨についたカットマークや土器の文様がすごく

よく見えてくるんですよね。

30日 今日も今日とて・・・ Excavation Day!

どんどん掘り進めています。

真ん中に見える石は続縄文時代の炉址かと考えています。

この面で大体2m50cmほど掘った地点で2000年ほど前です。

We are digging steadily.

We found epi-Jomon's fireplace.

We dug about roughly 2m50cm in this area, about 2000 years ago.

掘り進めるのと同時に記録をとっていきます。

平面に確認される遺構の図や壁で見られる土層の堆積など取るべき記録はいっぱい！

We take the record at the same time excavation.

We have to take the a lot of records that layer and ground plan.

29日 週も変わり・・・

週も変わり、今日からまた発掘の日々です。

今日は香深中学校の生徒がレクチャー＆体験発掘に参加しました。

まずは、岡田大先生から考古学とは、礼文島の遺跡の特徴などについてレクチャーを…。

Today, Kafuka Junior High School students participated in lecture & experience excavation.

At first Dr. Okada did the lecture about the characteristics of archaeology of Rebun Island.

そして、現場に行き、体験発掘です。

何か見つけられたかな？？

昨日は加藤先生の誕生日！

学生が折り紙で鶴を折ってプレゼントしてくれました！

Happy Birthday Kato Sensei!

Students gave Kato Sensei a present to fold the paper cranes.

現場ではサンプリングのため、全身を防護服に固めた怪しげな人の姿が・・・

In the site, people of white protective clothing was doing the sampling.

28日 お休みの日だけど・・・

考古学者はお休みより穴を掘るほうが重要なのです！

先日より合流したアラスカ大のDavid Yesner先生と我らがボス、北大の加藤先生のツーショット

ちょっとずつ掘り進めていきます。

昨日報告した墓の周囲を掘り進めた結果、巨大な石で囲ったエリアにヒトの骨が配置されていました。明日以降、さらに掘り進めていきます。

27日 徐々に発掘らしくなってきました

昨日は午前中に大雨が降ったので、午後から発掘スタート。遺跡は砂丘なのでとても水はけがいいので、サクサク掘り進められます。
そして我らがボスがとうとう移植を持ち、発掘を始めました。果たして何が出るのか！

何か発見した模様！
墓のようなものが・・・。

夜は皆でカラオケに行きました。
誰も彼も大熱唱！熱い礼文島の夜でした。

26日 夜釣り

ご飯のあとには、有志で夜釣りに。

見よ、Ｔ橋とＩ波のウキウキした顔を！

われらが釣りの師匠、Ｔ田さん。

お世話になります！

アメリカよりＪコブ氏、

沖縄からＳ藤氏もかけつけました。

準備中です。

 

 

みんな、釣れるかな・・・？？

 

 

待つこと5分・・・

 

 

高○のファーストヒット！

「クロソイ」という魚だそうです。

岩○も続けてヒット！

と思ったらヒット！ナイススマイルです！

Ｔ橋の釣果は続きます。

さらに。

 

この夜はＴ橋４－５匹、Ｓ藤氏２匹、

Ｉ波・Ｆ瀬が1匹ずつのＪコブが残念ながら坊主でした。

（Ｔ田監督はみんなの面倒を見てくださっていたので釣ってません）

 

 釣りの腕を磨いて、自給自足の発掘調査ができるようになるかも！？

 

 

26日 午後

午後も引き続き、現場作業。

ここでは続縄文より古い時代を狙います。

 

 

上がってくる土をふるいにかけます。

最初は小さいふるいを使っていましたが、

多くのマンパワーが必要だったので、

午後に写真のような大型ふるいが作成されました。

ブランコみたいで面白いです。

26日 午前中

今日は一日、学生さんは全員現場の発掘作業。

タワーがそびえてますね。

こちらに歩いている女性は、カナダ側スタッフのEリンさんです。

途中でHュー先生による、層位の説明がありました。

とてもわかりやすく、私自身、とても勉強になりました。

（ちゃんと報告書読んでないのがばればれ？）

 

学生たちは発掘のグリッドからいったん全員出て、

中のヒ○ー先生の説明に耳を傾けます。

これぞフィールドスクールという雰囲気。

 

 

オホーツク文化期の層にはたくさんの遺物が含まれます。

理解も進み、発掘のモチベーションも上がってきたのでは

ないでしょうか。

 

 

26日 早朝

北大博物館のE田先生がお帰りに。

軽自動車は礼文荘さんのお車。

ご主人がフェリーターミナルまで送るのかと見せかけて。。。

あれれ、E田先生が一人で運転しているぞ？

 

この日は、帰る人が宿の車を運転してターミナルで乗り捨てて、

次に礼文荘さんに来る人がセルフサービスで運転してくるという

斬新な送迎サービスだったのでした♪

 

札幌までお気をつけて！

25日 夜

 

夜はホテルでパワプロですか。

大人になってもゲーマーですね。。。
